DEMENTIA PROGRAM

One key is a supportive community.

Did you know that Dementia is not a normal part of aging, but is caused by diseases of the brain? Dementia is also not just about memory problems, although they are a significant part of the disease. In spite of the challenges this disease presents for patients and their caregivers, it is possible to have a good quality of life with dementia!

Since 2021, West Deerfield Township has sponsored a “Dementia Friendly” Initiative that aims to support those in our community struggling with dementia, as well as their caregivers. First responders, public service organizations, and members of the community have been closely involved since the start, which has been critical to the initiative’s success. The following information will help you learn more about what a dementia friendly community is, what’s been done so far, who the initiative’s stakeholders are and what’s next.

What Is A Dementia Friendly Community?

More than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s Disease and other forms of dementia, and more than 11 million Americans provide unpaid care for a family member or friend living with dementia. From the viewpoint of a person with dementia, a dementia-friendly community feels like a place where dignity, safety, inclusion, and independence are preserved. Everyday interactions are supportive, the environment is easy to navigate, and social opportunities continue to exist — so life feels meaningful and connected, even as memory changes.

Dementia is a community issue that must be addressed at a community level. Every part of the community has a unique role in fostering meaningful engagement and access to community life for people living with dementia and their family and caregivers.

A dementia-friendly community is informed, safe and respectful of individuals living with dementia, their families and caregivers, and provides supportive options that foster quality of life.

Key goals among dementia friendly communities include

  • Increasing awareness and understanding of dementia and people living with dementia
  • Increasing awareness and understanding of brain health and risk reduction
  • Collaborating with public, private, not-for-profit and health care sectors to better serve people living with dementia and their caregivers
  • Addressing changing needs of people with dementia and caregivers
  • Creating social and cultural environments that are welcoming to people living with dementia
  • Improving the physical environment in public places and systems so that they are dementia friendly

Being a dementia-friendly community is an ongoing process — it’s about embedding awareness, accessibility, and respect across all aspects of civic life.

That means:

  • Training front-line workers (businesses, first responders, drivers).
  • Creating social opportunities (cafés, arts, advisory groups).
  • Building partnerships (libraries, churches, hospitals, senior services).
  • Adjusting public spaces (signage, benches, lighting) if needed.

Together, these and other efforts ensure that West Deerfield Township continues to grow as a Dementia Friendly Community rooted in action, education, and compassion. Caregivers have shared how meaningful it is to feel seen and supported, and residents have expressed reassurance in knowing their Township is informed and prepared. These experiences affirm why this work matters and why it continues.

What’s next?

West Deerfield Township remains deeply committed to strengthening and expanding its dementia-friendly efforts. This work is intentional, ongoing, and rooted in real action. Being a Dementia Friendly Community is not a label, it is a sustained commitment to inclusion, education, and compassionate service.

Looking ahead, the Township will continue to invest in training, public education, and meaningful partnerships. Priorities include expanded outreach, deeper engagement with local businesses and faith-based organizations, and increased visibility of dementia-friendly practices throughout the community.

One of our newest and most inspiring initiatives on the horizon is a special “No Hush” film event at the Wayfarer Theater in Highland Park, a movie experience designed specifically for individuals living with dementia and their care partners. This event will celebrate connection, accessibility, and shared joy. More details will be announced soon.

The Township’s Dementia Friendly Committee convenes regularly to guide this work, and residents are welcome to attend. To learn more or get involved, please contact the Township office at the main number.

Continued training opportunities, expanded community events, new partnerships, and ideas remain central to our vision as this important work evolves.
